Valencia Mayor Huervas declares interest to run for Bukidnon governor in 2025 elections
Valencia City, Bukidnon Mayor Azucena “Sunny” Huervas declared her interest to run for Bukidnon governor in next year’s midterm elections.
“If walay Zubiri nga mudagan (as gobernador), ani-a ang usa ka babaye. Ani-a si Mayor Huervas,” she declared before thousands who witnessed the event Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the Valencia City Gymnasium and Cultural Center, which also served as her oathtaking event under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas.
Huervas, who claimed she initially already wanted to retire as soon as her current term ends, said she “encountered many challenges” before she reached her decision to gun for the Bukidnon gubernatorial seat.
“However, if we have foresight, plans, the heart to help, determination and strength, nothing is impossible,” Huervas said in vernacular. She said that she is optimistic at the thought that a female will serve as the leader of the province.
If she succeeds, Huervas will be the first lady governor of Bukidnon.
Meanwhile, incumbent Bukidnon 4th District Board Member Rodrigo “Dodong” Rosal will run for Valencia City Mayor.
Huervas is notable for being the first woman to serve as mayor in Valencia City and the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history. Before becoming mayor, Huervas served as vice mayor from 2010 to 2014 and as a barangay captain for Barangay Catumbalon from 2002 to 2010. Additionally, she was the president of the Association of Barangay Councils, making her an ex-officio member of the city council during her tenure?.
Most recently, Huervas was awarded Gawad Parangal Most Outstanding Local Chief Executive of the Philippines (Component City Category) for her exemplary leadership and excellent programs on social services and social protection. She’s the sole awardee among component cities in Mindanao.
Huervas’s administration has prioritized infrastructure development, resulting in the construction of new roads and the improvement of existing ones. These projects have enhanced connectivity and accessibility within the city, fostering economic growth and making daily commutes easier for residents.
Under her leadership, Valencia City has seen advancements in healthcare services and educational facilities. Huervas has overseen the enhancement of local health services, ensuring that residents have better access to medical care. Additionally, her efforts to upgrade educational facilities have provided students with improved learning environments, contributing to the overall development of the youth in the city.
