Should lotto outlet cashiers be provided with hazard pay?

COMMENTARY | OPINION | BUKIDNON NEWS | CRIME | CONTROVERSIAL | BUKIDNON ONLINE – Should lotto outlet owners in Bukidnon provide their cashiers or employees with hazard pay? This got us thinking after the very unfortunate incident in Malaybalay City just a few days ago.

An employee of a lotto outlet in Malaybalay City, particularly the one located along Magsaysay Street, Barangay 2, was robbed of thousands of pesos and was shot TWICE (once on the head even!).

The Malaybalay lotto outlet cashier named Mercy was reportedly on her way home and hailed a motorela when the robbers attacked her.

According to reports, even the motorela driver got shot as well. Reports also say that the robbers rode a motorcycle but the engine failed so they scrammed away on foot!

Because of that incident, we thought…should owners of lotto outlets and other business establishments provide hazard pay for their employees? Should business establishments also install CCTV cameras for added security?

A few months ago, Bukidnon Board Member Jay Albarece filed a resolution before the Sangguniang Panlalawigan requiring banks, Internet cafes, schools, restaurants and other commercial establishments to install CCTV cameras or closed circuit television cameras. We wonder whatever happened to that proposal. Board Member Jay Albarece even left a comment about our article. Has it been passed yet? How do the authorities monitor if indeed the business owners implement this?

Last we heard, the robbery suspects have already been identified but that still does not erase the fact that people in Malaybalay City are getting more worried by the minute.

By the way, whatever happened to the police outpost in Barangay 2 Malaybalay?
