Manoy Zubiri laments very low prices of palay, corn; meets with DA
Bukidnon 3rd District Congressman Manuel “Manoy” Zubiri recently met with the regional director of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in order to appeal for help and assistance for farmers amid the currently low buying prices for palay and corn.
Zubiri told DA Regional Director Carlene Collado that the prices “have been going down” and have remained “very fluid.” Zubiri said that the low prices affect the farmers “because they are losing and will continue to lose any chance of making an income out of their literal back-breaking work.”
As of this writing, prices of corn have gone as low Php 9 per kilo and palay Php 12 per kilo. These prices may continue to decrease.
Zubiri also appealed to Collado to serve as conduit of farmers “with concerned national agencies and departments so that they will be given help in the cost of producing these produce in the future.”
Zubiri mentioned assistance in the form of subsidies as well as financial access such as loans.
“We cannot let the sacrifices of our farmers be in vain,” Zubiri said, adding that the farmers have always been “frontliners” even before the pandemic.
“They are our heroes. The literal back-breaking sacrifice they give for all of us is immense. But despite this, they only ask that they be able to provide for their families – food on their table.”
