Largest drug rehab, mental health center in Mindanao opens in Bukidnon

Touted as the largest drug rehab, addiction treatment and mental health care center in all of Mindanao, Philippines, a Php 500 Million facility along Diversion Road, Barangay Casisang, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon is finally open.

The Northern Mindanao Wellness and Reintegration Center was inaugurated last August 3, 2018 and no less than Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte led the rites. A few members of his cabinet were also in attendance.

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, who started his political career in Bukidnon as a 3-term congressman in the First District, was on hand to welcome Duterte. It was Zubiri who first shared with multi-awarded blogger Mindanaoan that a mega drug rehab will soon rise in the Province of Bukidnon, thanks to donations from the Friends of the Philippines Foundation, chaired by Jose Kho, and the Malaybalay City local government. The Friends of the Philippines Foundation donated the funds (as seen on our earlier blog post) to build the facilities while the Malaybalay LGU donated the 5-hectare parcel of land where the rehab and mental health care center is.

Zubiri, alongside his father and cousin, actually played an instrumental role in helping make this Bukidnon drug rehab a reality. Senator Zubiri was in attendance when the memorandum was signed last year. Senator Zubiri’s father, Jose Ma. Zubiri, Jr. is the incumbent Bukidnon governor, while his cousin is Malaybalay City Mayor Ignacio Zubiri.

Senator Zubiri said that the Bukidnon drug rehab, which he calls “a dream project,” is a product of a “public and private partnership.”

“The Northern Mindanao Wellness and Reintegration Center will cater to all the drug rehab and mental health patients of Region 10 and even other parts of Mindanao,” he said, adding that the center is a “great example of medical tourism in the countryside.”

The senator also said that Bukidnon is an ideal place for a rehab because of its beauty and cool weather.

The Friends of the Philippines Foundation is also associated with Kitson Soriano Kho, the Filipino-Chinese chairman of Hong Kong-based The Kho Group and executive director of UAA Kinming Development Corporation.
