All-female army unit recovers firearms in old rebel camp in Malaybalay
The Army in Bukidnon announced an important success in their work to remove communist New People’s Army (NPA) fighters from areas along the border between Bukidnon province and Agusan del Sur province.
On Tuesday, a special all-female Army team went into an old rebel camp deep in the mountains at Sitio Bendum, Barangay Busdi in Malaybalay City. There, they found hidden guns. The weapons they discovered included two CZ 858 rifles, one M14 rifle, one M4 rifle, & one M16A1 rifle barrel. All of these are military-style firearms.
The mission was done by an all-female unit from the Army’s First Special Forces Battalion. This team is called Special Forces Team 16 “Maya.” Captain Cristy Timtim leads the group, with 1Lt. Divine Grace Rodriguez and 2Lt. Leslie Calunsag, four enlisted personnel and one CAFGU Civilian Active Auxiliary.

Klook.comThe soldiers reached this area in the difficult Pantaron mountain range, which is one of the last places where NPA rebels still operate in Mindanao. Lieutenant Colonel Emil Bautista, who commands the First Special Forces Battalion, said using an all-female combat team “shows the important and growing role of women in front-line fighting and security work.”
Major General Michele Anayron, commander of the 4th Infantry Division explained: “We are giving female soldiers real combat experience in areas where our main military operations are happening right now.”
According to Bautista, Team Maya plays a major role in operations against what remains of the NCMRC rebel group.
