Malaybalay City Councilor Jason Chad Ayala has launched additional measures to help and protect the livelihood of local hog growers and backyard farmers. Together with the City Government of Malaybalay as well as international companies, including some from Spain, Ayala’s Malaybalay Backyard Hog Growers Association program studied ways to reduce the cost of raising pigs and provide an additional source of income. This means protection and additional income for Malaybalay locals and backyard farmers.

Free spent grains are available through the Malaybalay City Vet, while feeds from the association cost only Php 1,000 to Php 1,200 per 50 kilograms, far lower than the current market price of Php 2,000.

Through a partnership with MM Farms, backyard farmers can now buy better breeds or genetics at a lower cost to help their pigs grow faster.

Ayala also said that an ordinance will also be pushed requiring slaughterhouses and meat shops with city permits to buy hogs directly from local hog growers in Malaybalay City.

The association will also open its own meat shop and agrivet store, where pork is expected to be sold at an accessible price of Php 250 to Php 260 per kilo.
