Manoy Zubiri appeals for more budget for agri department

In order to ensure food security, there is a need to review and increase the budget of the Department of Agriculture (DA). This, according to Bukidnon 3rd District Congressman and 2022 elections gubernatorial aspirant Manuel “Manoy” Zubiri.

During his privilege speech before the Wednesday plenary session at the House of Representatives, the Assistant Majority Floor Leader urged his fellow legislators to increase the agri agency’s budget for 2022.

“We have experienced the heavy importation of rice and other meat items during this pandemic,” Zubiri said, adding that there is also a need for subsidies especially to small farmers.

The Bukidnon solon emphasized that the Philippines must attain proper and sufficient food security. “We must stand on our own 2 feet.”

As earlier reports, DA Assistant Secretary Noel Reyes said that their agency is asking for an Php 8 to 10 Billion increase for next year. DA originally proposed a budget of Php 231 Billion but the Department of Budget and Management only recommended Php 91 Billion.

Zubiri has been steadfast in asking for more funds for the DA. Earlier this year, he said that if the farmers do not receive proper, sufficient subsidy, “this will be a never-ending process.”
