An open forum was also held whereby some incoming city councilors asked some department heads of updates, statistics and other pertinent data. One concern discussed during the open forum was the mendicancy problem. The city social welfare and development chief said that many Badjaos have started begging for alms around the city.

Outgoing city councilor Jimmy Gellor, Jr., on the other hand, raised the problem involving the “spaghetti wires” found in the city. Gellor stressed that something should be done with this and that representatives from the electric cooperatives, telephone and cable companies should be called to the council soon.

Other problems raised during the open forum attended by incoming and outgoing Malaybalay City government officials included improper waste disposal, forest denudation, noise pollution, high unemployment rates, drug trafficking, drug addiction, malnutrition, non-registration of children and resettlement.

After the open forum, incumbent Malaybalay City Mayor and Bukidnon 2nd District Congressman-apparent Florencio Flores, Jr. also delivered a message. Flores reminded the officials that they work as a team with one spirit, compassion and with set priorities.

“We can’t do all things at the same time. This is the reality. We should learn how to prioritize. We must also ask ourselves, ‘what are we here for? Are we here for our own agenda? Our own achievements? Or are we here because we need to work with a team?’,” Flores stressed.

The newly-elected Bukidnon Second District representative, who served as Malaybalay City Mayor for three consecutive terms, also emphasized the need for compassion.

“I believe that unless you have compassion, you really cannot serve your constituents well,” he said.

After Flores’ speech, Malaybalay City Mayor-apparent Ignacio “Inaki” Zubiri and Malaybalay City Vice Mayor-apparent Victor Aldeguer also shared some thoughts.

Plaques of recognition were also given to incumbent and outgoing City Councilors. Leis, on the other hand, were given to the incoming city councilors. (MISA / BukidnonOnline.com)
